The Six Discernment Tests

When you sense God may be speaking through a dream, an impression, a verse or a word from someone else, walk it through these six tests before you act. Then watch for the signals that say slow down.

Testing does not weaken revelation. Testing protects revelation.

Chapter 6

The six tests

Check each one

  1. 1. The Scripture Test · Isaiah 8:20

Does this align with the written Word of God? If a dream, impression, or perceived guidance contradicts Scripture, reject it — no experience overrides God's Word.

  2. 2. The Character Test · John 14:9

Does this reflect the nature of God revealed in Jesus? A word may break no specific verse and still fail His character — pressuring through fear, flattering pride, or encouraging isolation.

  3. 3. The Fruit Test · Matthew 7:15–20

What does this produce — peace, humility, and obedience, or fear, pride, and confusion (Galatians 5:22–23; James 3:17)?

  4. 4. The Jesus Test · John 16:13–14

Does this draw me closer to Christ and glorify Him? If a word makes you feel important but not surrendered, slow down.

  5. 5. The Counsel Test · Proverbs 15:22

Would mature, Scripture-grounded believers affirm caution, clarity, or concern? Be wary of guidance that makes you resistant to counsel.

  6. 6. The Time Test

Does this remain clear and confirmed over time, or fade once emotion passes? Not everything requires instant action — patience is often wisdom.

Warning signs

Six signals to slow down

  • Urgency that bypasses wisdom

Fear often says, “act now or everything will be ruined.”

  • Flattery that inflates pride

A true word deepens humility, not self-importance.

  • Direction that isolates you

    Deception grows away from accountability.

  • Spiritual language excusing disobedience

“God told me” does not make sin holy.

  • Fear disguised as warning

    Anxiety can feel prophetic.

  • Desire disguised as revelation

When we want something badly, we start reading everything as confirmation.

Reflect

What I am testing

What do I sense God may be saying?

Which tests does it pass, and which do I need help with?

Who can I ask to test it with me?
