The Three Mistakes Review
The book's six Reader Reflection questions, on one sheet. Answer them on your own, then compare answers as a team. Come back to them about three months after the series.
There are no perfect answers. There is only an invitation to listen carefully to what God may be saying.
Question 1
Which of the three mistakes described in this book is most visible in my church?
- Teaching about God more than walking with God
- Producing activity instead of formation
- Equipping people for church instead of friendship with God
Which one creates the greatest challenge in your current ministry context? Why?
Question 2
If a new believer spent five years in our church, what would they become? Would they primarily become:
- informed?
- involved?
- active?
- knowledgeable?
Or would they become:
- discerning?
- responsive?
- spiritually mature?
- increasingly intimate with God?
What evidence supports your answer?
Question 3
How does our church currently define success? What metrics receive the most attention? Attendance? Giving? Volunteers? Programs? Events? Are there ways your church could more intentionally celebrate transformation, obedience, humility, discernment, and spiritual maturity?
Notes
Question 4
Do our discipleship systems teach people how to walk with God? Consider the average believer in your church. Have they been taught:
- how to pray?
- how to recognize conviction?
- how to discern God’s voice?
- how to navigate hidden seasons?
- how to respond to spiritual promptings?
- how to cultivate friendship with God?
If not, what might need to change?
Question 5
What role does friendship with God currently play in your ministry philosophy? Is it:
- central?

- occasionally discussed?
- rarely emphasized?
What would change if friendship with God became the explicit goal of every ministry, class, program, and discipleship pathway?
Question 6
Where are you personally in the formation process? As a pastor or church leader, it is easy to focus on everyone else’s growth while neglecting your own. Take a moment to consider: What is God currently teaching you? Where is He forming you? What invitation have you been resisting?
What act of obedience might He be asking you to take?
